Crosscut.com, a local online news site for the Pacific Northwest, is seeking a contract Web designer to help take us to the next level of visual appeal and functionality. This is a full-time position of a month's duration, on-site in downtown Seattle. We are on a fast track, hoping to complete design work this summer.
Crosscut is a year-old startup with a small staff and big aspirations. We're looking to broaden the definition of journalism and the definition of journalist. So the person we hire to redesign our site will be someone with an interest in news and who is plugged in to technology developments in the media business.
The ideal candidate will have a portfolio of sites which work across browsers and consist of standards-compliant XHTML. No coding will be required, but applicants should have experience creating templated sites with dynamic visual elements driven by toolkits like Prototype or Dojo. Additional consideration will be given to applicants with experience using Django templates or similar technologies.
Deliverables for this project include an art package consisting of SVG iconography, page features like headers and footers, and style sheets including several color and font schemes. In addition to the art package, there will be roughly 50 page layouts, including several templates which must accommodate a variety of content sizes and media types.
Please express your interest via e-mail to jobs@crosscut.com and include hourly rate information. To ensure you are considered, put "designer" in the subject field. No offshore inquiries, please.

We're looking for motivated, curious, inventive, widely read students who dig media, news, and the Web. You might be a liberal arts major who writes well but needs real-world experience. Or you might be a journalism major who's ready to explore the online world in inventive ways. This internship will enable you to do a little of everything, from the glamorous to the unglamorous. You will be limited only by your skills and aptitude.
We'd prefer a commitment of at least 20 hours per week for a period of at least two months. Dates and work hours are flexible, but we cannot pay you, nor can we provide accommodations. Our office is in downtown Seattle.
