A coalition of the willing wants more say on a new superintendent

Posted Thu, Mar 22, 1:15 p.m.

I agree with coolpapa too... we all want great schools. I hope the selection process will emphasize quality and will function more like a purification system than an academic alimentary canal.

Can Seattle get its leadership groove back?

Posted Mon, Oct 17, 7:02 a.m.

Piloting a modern PRT would be a great project to work on the wish list. Something that really breaks new ground and exceeds expectations.

If trust breeds speed, no wonder Seattle has a trust deficit

Posted Sat, Oct 15, 10:22 p.m.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me the issue isn't trust so much as laziness or lack of resources for small matters like coordinating traffic lights, and for big matters like transportation and economic systems, it's more the fact that we live in a time of great change ...

How three cities are solving big problems

I think we do need to move on big problems too-- like, how will we eliminate carbon pollution in just a few decades? How will the money we spend now help free us?

Best of Crosscut 2010: What sort of leadership can restore public trust?

Posted Mon, Dec 20, 10:04 p.m.

I wish we'd shift more to income tax and away from sales, property and business taxes. It makes so much sense to pay for shared expenses out of healthy cash flow, rather than sapping people indiscriminately. If we could only be disciplined about setting the level and sticking to it. ...

A radical proposal for funding public colleges

Posted Mon, Nov 29, 6:03 a.m.

Seattle Times ran an interesting editorial about for-profit higher education: "For an education sector that has grown tenfold in the last decade, lax oversight has fostered a system of high tuition costs and low graduation rates." http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/editorials/2013532898_edit29loans.html

A radical proposal for funding public colleges

Posted Fri, Nov 26, 4:18 p.m.

Privatizing public colleges would be a terrible direction, a scam to enable the wealthiest among us to get our public assets, turn a profit from recurring state revenue and then choose what may or may not be taught. Ugh. I'm not against free market options to compete against better structures, ...

A new (but old) perspective on the Boeing move

Posted Tue, Dec 1, 6:51 a.m.

I like the fresh perspective this article in digging into the history and intuitive reason for unions to exist in the first place. Working in a union position now, I have to say it's a good thing to have professional negotiators working on my behalf and staff lawyers helping keep ...

Mr. Lincoln in City Hall

I like a leader who thinks ahead... so many cities have ostriches instead. Now is our chance to re-engineer this city for a future that will be much different.

The political fallout from Boeing's bombshell

Posted Thu, Oct 29, 7:03 p.m.

Boeing did not just decide to move to Charleston, they just executed an existing strategy and pinned the blame on unions after throwing negotiations. Boeing managers and employees have been moving to S. Carolina for months. The state should consider promises of future behavior to be deception and proceed as ...

How Obama is rebuilding the GOP base

Posted Fri, Sep 18, 6:38 a.m.

I wonder if those gender-biased banner ads displaying all over the Internet that say "Obama wants to pay moms to get a college degree" with images of happy young female graduates and links to specific states that then peter out without providing any info may have agitated the independent-thinking male ...

An encore for the Seattle World's Fair

Posted Thu, Sep 17, 2:42 p.m.

In reply to 'It would be fun appears to motivate way too many mass transit "solutions" within Seattle (tram included)', I suggested it because, well, fun would fit a World Fair...it would be like a carnival ride. More importantly, the design could compete directly with the automobile and win at ...

An encore for the Seattle World's Fair

Posted Fri, Sep 11, 3:26 p.m.

These comments are all over the place and I suppose this post adds to the splatter, but I just wanted to say I like the idea of a 50th Anniversary event, and would suggest devising a switchable aerial tramway network to serve the campus and branch out to the city ...

Coping with a post-Boeing world

Posted Mon, Jul 13, 11:03 p.m.

I like your idea about preparing for Boeing's exit by building alternative industries here to attract its best and brightest. Boeing moved its deciders to Chicago for strategic reasons, after all, and we should expect more strategery to come. I also think the Washington would do well to go on ...

Get ready for Seattle's PostGlobe

I like it-- National Public Newspaper here we come. I think journalism is the kind of public-service profession that (like health care work) makes more sense done without the distraction (corruption?) of profit-making as it's primary goal. It would be interesting if this new venture partnered with Real Change to ...

A green slate for Seattle City Council?

Posted Tue, Feb 10, 6:39 a.m.

I'm glad there are people running for local council positions who recognize the need to progress on our transportation systems, among other things. I'd be interested in reading more about Jessie Israel too... having worked with her I know she's pretty good.

Memo to P-I employees: Think lean

Posted Thu, Jan 15, 1:17 p.m.

Here's what I'd consider doing at the P-I: Keep seattlepi.nwsource.com domain brand - it has all the online search value now, with 80% out of state visitors and 20% in-state, but slowly morph it into a local news site with hyperlocal blogs contributing content and drawing visitors. Gradually establish a ...

Can Seattle be a Slow City?

I think about what the northwest was just 100 years ago and wonder what it will be like in just 50 more, now that the roads are built. We've always assumed this region will grow as there's no choice in the matter, and our business leaders reflexively cheer for growth ...

The state's economic strength helps Gregoire

You'd think the state's economic strength would help Gregoire. She's worked hard to benefit the state, on many levels, east and west, and I think it would be a shame to take it for granted. Maybe not a shame, but it would be bad for the people of the state ...
