A national expert asks: Have unions stymied education reform?

Posted Thu, Jul 7, 6:46 a.m.

Terry Moe!?! Dick, this guy is the poster boy for school vouchers and privatization of public schools. He has this bizarre idea that technology will save U.S. schools. But, you've got to let him speak for himself. Also, note he sees technology as the pathway to breaking teacher unions. Here's ...

Pilgrimage to the Pasayten Wilderness

Posted Sat, Jul 2, 9:22 a.m.

Snoqualman…I wasn’t going to respond to your post until two front page articles appeared in the Times and P.I. about a grizzly sighting in the North Cascades. My article, however, was about the Pasayten, and its culture, history and geology. The point I made about grizzlies is based on these ...

Climate change menaces the future of lynx

Posted Mon, Jun 13, 8:08 p.m.

Lynx habitat in the Okanogan region has another enemy...the pine beetle. Vast swaths of forest are dying under the onslaught of this menace. Fire and cold winters are the pine beetle's enemies, but we need more of both to eradicate this hearty habitat consumer. The Tripod Complex fire in the ...

There goes another Seattle startup!

Posted Mon, Apr 25, 9:34 p.m.

It is my understanding the the US Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) has been heavily involved with this deal to ship Crosscut.com jobs overseas. How a school custodian helped fire up one science program

Posted Fri, Feb 4, 4:23 p.m.

Soundsalmon: There are new Washington State Standards for Science. This year's MSP will be the first test of your and my teaching to those standards. We all try to teach to the standards. You supplement your NSF kits with materials from the Seattle Aquarium. I supplement with machines I (or ...

How a school custodian helped fire up one science program

Posted Thu, Feb 3, 12:28 p.m.

MikeSea...I have been accused of being a Constuctivist in the past. The problem I have with that suggestion is that educational jargon is, by its nature, self-limiting. I consider myself nothing but a middle-aged metal tradesman teaching kids to enjoy school. I am decisively unorthodox and that may make me ...

How I became an anti-union Democrat

Posted Mon, Jan 3, 7:36 p.m.

Blue Dog Democrat (Adam Vogt) speaks! He tells me that I should take a pay cut when the last three pay increases I have had as a teacher in this state dissolved into the ether of reduced benefits and increased health premiums. Net gain = Zero (negative actually). Maybe I ...
