Best of 2011: James Corner's waterfront plans: Get the editing pencil

Posted Thu, Dec 22, 4:54 p.m.

Yammer, yammer, yammer. "Seattle process" in action. Or inaction. This is how the downward spiral starts. Why not let someone like Comer who has actually produced good work do his thing. Why listen to the endless grey Seattle chorus of negativity?

Memo to Seattle: You have to play by the preservation rules!

Brooks wrote Clark that "we are concerned about the affect of significantly increased height limits on Pioneer Square's historic character and the long-term viability of the neighborhood as a National Register District." Ouch. Did she really say "affect"?

Lessons from Black Friday

Posted Sun, Nov 28, 4:15 p.m.

Several years ago I sent my two kids to a well-known summer camp in the San Juans. One of the questions on the background information form was "Does your child have issues?" Post your pithy rejoinder below:

Best of 2009: What would Jane Jacobs do about the Viaduct?

Posted Sat, Oct 3, 12:25 p.m.

I have no idea what Jane Jacobs would think, though I suspect she'd be for the lower scale, more nuanced approach rather than the mega-highway tunnel. It's interesting though to look at what has happened to the waterfront in her old neighborhood, Greenwich Village. In its heyday it was a ...

'Misimpressions' about the Viaduct plan

Posted Sun, Aug 2, 2:47 a.m.

Parhaps Seattle should look at how other big cities have handled the problem of aging waterfront traffic viaducts. A good place to start would be the former West Side Highway in New York. The initial proposal to replace this viaduct was a buried highway -- like the Seattle tunnel -- ...
