If the list of buildings above is what Seattleites consider "great architecture", I have to wonder- have any of you ever been anywhere else? Columbia Center? The Washington Mutual Tower? The horrible facelift of the Henry? sorry, but these are very average commercial projects. and, not to pee in my ...

NONE of the extremely profitable corporations in Seattle has ever built a decent, much less inspiring building. Microsoft, Adobe, Amazon, Vulcan, Boeing, and on down the line- they all have settled for lowest cost per square foot commercial architecture like this. It almost makes you miss the old Monopolists of ...

Its actually coal industry propaganda to characterize this as jobs versus the economy. The downtown Bellingham waterfront, largely the old GP plant, has the capacity, if properly developed by the City and Port, to create FAR more jobs than the 200 odd jobs up in the county- but it sure ...

4 Culture makes King County a better place, and the multiplier effect of arts spending is long proven. If all you care about is lower taxes, there are plenty of nice republican states you can move to, that progressive democratic states like Washington Subsidize. Idaho, for example, is solidly anti-tax, ...

now if only they would play some actual jazz. I once sent them a nice letter listing 100 or so jazz musicians and bands they never played- and they actually responded to me, telling me, in no uncertain terms, that they found their listeners were allergic to anything that could ...

Currently, the state says the fares are at least 25% below costs. To me, this clearly means that if nothing else was improved or changed, privatizing the ferries would mean an immediate doubling of fares. Realistically, probably tripling, as the WSF does not pay the state rent, nor mortgage payments, ...

Just think about the "efficiencies" if the Ferries are privatized. First, of course, fares would double immediately. The state says that right now, fares only cover about 75% of costs- so thats 25% right there. But the state doesnt pay for a lot of stuff a private company would have ...

I repeat- you have never been anywhere where there is really bad governance, if the best you can come up with is the Mcguire building and Strip club parking lots. Earthquake hits the Northwest- say, for instance, the Nisqually quake- and a few 100 year old buildings are damaged. Earthquake ...

If you think we havent gotten good governance, I can only assume you have never been anywhere where they actually have BAD governance. There are 195 countries in the world- and we are definitely in the top ten or twenty in terms of honest, efficient government. Of course, there is ...

Texas has lower taxes- and they do that the old fashioned way- BY BORROWING THE MONEY. Current projections have Texas $20 to $25 Billion in the hole in the next couple of years, because they have been cutting taxes, while not cutting spending. http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=521130 I guess if you just say ...

Lets be clear- this painting was never "public art". Public Art means the Public was involved in funding, selecting, and owning art, and it is on display in a public place. Sometimes, without a doubt, the public does this either thru elected officials or thru government employees, so individual members ...

There has been a wide ranging, very interesting discussion of this subject over on Greg Sandow's blog at Arts Journal- http://www.artsjournal.com/sandow/ Basically, the audience for classical music has been shrinking for decades. And I dont believe its because, as the greeks complained, kids today are lazy, illiterate, and cultureless- its ...

I love Patti Smith. I was at that 1978 show in Seattle. She can do no wrong in my eyes... But I have it on good authority, from someone who knows these things and was there, that those were not "army boots without laces", but, in fact, $900 Ann Demeulemeesters. ...

I live in the country- my zoning is one unit per 40 acres. And I know farmers that are gay. Being rural is not a way to avoid the exact same sexual preferences that urban people are born with, too. Maybe in some rural areas, they deny it more, but ...

I think you have it exactly backwards. I lived in Belltown 25 years ago, and Seattle was full of young people from all over the country. They were here because it was cheap, and relatively unstructured. Cheap storefronts, dive bars you could make your own, lots of galleries and performance ...
