Sometimes you Crosscut commenters just make my day. With the exception of the first one, your thoughts above left me feeling hopeful. Thanks.

I have fond memories of that building. I worked there while saving money for college. The FBI had the 3rd floor. They could choose to make any elevator an express for themselves to ferry a felon from the basement garage to their offices for questioning. Most of them looked like ...

Personally, I would have preferred Jim Dever. Black seems like a nice, safe choice. Maybe she'll surprise us.

I was 6 yrs. old and living near Green Lake at the time. Our next door neighbor was our Air Raid Warden. The basement of his house was full of cots and blankets and first aid supplies. Our basement windows and the upper parts of the other house windows were ...

dbreneman, Oh please... would you want to be equated with Chihuly? (My impression has been that you're from the Tacoma area.) -an old native Seattlite (who never wanted to live in a "world class city")

numbered streets: Generally speaking ('cause I'm not sure if it's absolute), avenues run north/south, streets run east/west. If the number comes before the geographic direction (can't think of proper terminology) as in 45th NE, it's an avenue. If the number comes last, NE 45th, it's a street. And Madison St. ...

housing: I too live in a north Seattle neighborhood built up in 1949-50. Several years ago, on "Neighbors Night Out" at our block party, several of the younger couples were talking about how they would like to add on, build up, etc., as they needed more room. Finally I said, ...

memories: After reading this piece, my mind went wandering down memory lane. I was a child then and I remember seeing an anti-aircraft gun with camouflage net draped over it, sitting somewhere north of the Hec Ed pavilion... and the blimps over Bremerton. An irony suddenly occurred to me... what ...
