Are we the Barbarians we've been waiting for?

The Mound by the Sound? Sad watching Seattle decline from the Space Age Promise of the 60s to now... The great green space initiative rejected by the voters. The embracing of the distracting sports stadiums instead. The loss of one of your two dailies...Even Detroit has two... plus they have ...

Cruise ships: In Seattle or Italy, they are meant to be impressive

These massive cattle boats are hardly the epitome of grace and class. This Concordia (You could hide the RMS Titanic behind it) could not hold a candle to the RMS Olympic or other White Star and Cunard liners.... Top-heavy and over-wrought, these modern vessels compare unfavorly even to the last ...

More victims of the heritage hatchet

Yes... If we break up more Schooner Wawonas... raze more country churches...Bulldoze downtown theaters for parking lots... We will reduce the burden, at least symbolically, on taxpayers... Washington state have never really "got it" when it comes to its heritage. Tea Party away! ---Steve Lindsey Keene, NH

The country’s bad mood may doom state heritage-tourism plan

Posted Wed, Jul 7, 6:45 a.m.

I don't trust the National Park Service, since they ordered the scrapping of the Steamer Nobska in Boston, the Ellis Island Ferry in New York and now are lobbying for the destruction of Jack (Kerouac)'s Bridge in Lowell, Ma... Trojan horse no... But the NPS can and often does act ...

Poor Knute Berger... Like one of the doomed engineers in that horrifying scene in the movie Titanic, stuggling to keep the vessel afloat, keep the lights burning for those above... valiant but with a forgone conclusion. Washington state, rich is resources, never had to conserve, to save, to harbor, to ...

The classic ferries that got away

Posted Mon, Sep 14, 7:30 p.m.

Hummm... Could have done the same with the lumber schooner Wawona or old steam ferry San Mateo in Lake Washington... Given people a chance to still appreciate Seattle's rich maritime heritage, ill-advisedly entrusted to the likes of the Northwest Seaport and their ink... Perhaps it will take another generation of ...

The P-I: Saying goodbye to a liberal voice

Posted Tue, Mar 24, 8:32 p.m.

The demise of the P-I and the decline of the Times is symbolic of Seattle's steep cultural decline...Both papers were pale replicas of those in Seattle's East Coast rival Boston...Boston's two papers sharply differentiated themselves from each other...Both are a joy to read for their particular strengths....In contrast, Seattle's two ...

Don't forget the ship!

Joe, The whole idea of the Wawona's destruction, instead of sinking her as a SCUBA dive site in Lake Washington, is to bury her... The Wawona has embarrassed too many of Seattle's glass-jawed leaders. Rep. Steven Lindsey Ches-3 Keene, NH SteveLindsey60@hotmail.com

I know who sank the Wawona

Posted Thu, Mar 5, 8:20 a.m.

Yes, the truth outs...Seattle, the so-called promising city on the Pacific Rim, by denying it past, cuts its own throat... Now a playground for the insufferable dot.com rich, and their retinue of hangers-on...No longer the resource-collecting, blue-collar town...That won't do...Just see how they treat the commerical fisherman...segregated off by themselves...Denied ...

jbeattie, Thank you for your generous offer. I was a volunteer and crewmember aboard the Virginia V back in my Seattle days. Maybe my views of NW Seaport were formed back then among the deckhands and Capt Don Moss was in her pilot house. I guess I have harsh feelings ...

Sailing into oblivion

Why not merely sink Wawona in Lake Washington? SCUBA divers will gladly pay for the experience and the hull will be preserved in cold war for them to see. The Wawona will continue to be an attraction of sorts. Perhaps visible from the bottom of glass-bottom boats like those found ...

Like jbeattie, I spent some time at the CFB and watched the years take its toll on the Wawona's wood walls. I remember when the bandsaw was brought in. When a few knees were symbolically cut for placement in the Wawona. The promise of renovation never came through. As far ...

Sorry, but more thoughts on Wawona's demise... I tried submitting letters to Seattle's two dailies, but like many reactionary Southern state dailies, they refuse to publish letters from "away." No wonder these "guardians" of Seattle's marketplace of ideas are dying...One scheduled to close shortly...Had they remainded relevant...And taken strong editorial ...
