In public radio ethics, it's who you are that counts

Posted Wed, Nov 16, 10:54 a.m.

Okay, pointsOlaf.. taken. But as an anchor he is reading NEWS, sometimes followed by an interview.. So let's say that his writers of the news leads are writing from the Israeli point of view, and apparently usually not consulting Palestinian sources. CP

Olaf, a couple of comments back.. Please don't assume that I was saying that NPR has a pro-Israel bias. In his NEWS reports on All Things Considered, Robert Siegel AS AN INDIVIDUAL tends to report only from the Israeli point of view, which often lead to statements contrary to fact ...

In public radio ethics, it's who you are that counts

NPR shows its political correctness (under current standards) in the reporting of Robert Siegel, on All Things Considered, on any story about Israel-Palestine, or any story about the Middle East that involves Israel and/or Palestine (and most such stories do). Siegel invariably presents the Israel side of the story, and ...

Tale of 2 Seattles: Obama mixes in very different settings

Feeble reporting of what was happening at the Paramount. What was going on outside, in the street, before and during the President's appearance? C'mon, Crosscut. It's all right to report all the relevant info about this presidential visit.

To fix the ferry system, sell those boats

Posted Mon, Jan 24, 11:09 a.m.

There was a nice theme song: "The Black Ball Ferry Line, up in Seattle.." Who can remember the rest of the lyric? On morning radio, chirping: "Ivar's Acres of Clams...Pier 54, foot of Madison Street" and.. "Seattle: Queen City of the Pacific Northwest"

Knute Berger: Why I'm a writer and a part of Crosscut

Is Crosscut really so excellent, or is in that the other media -- all of them -- are so flaccid and incompetent?

Mind sex and 'Tristan'

Posted Thu, Aug 5, 3:07 p.m.

The performance I attended (August 4) apparently was an improvement in some respects over the already generally excellent(per the earlier Crosscut review) opening night. Asher Fischer again was masterful in getting an entrancing performance out of the orchestra. The principals were splendid, especially Persson, slim-blonde-under 40, much more physically believable ...

David Brooks is go-to guy for bringing theology into today's public sphere

Posted Wed, Jul 21, 9:50 a.m.

It's a stretch to commend or accuse David Brooks of having a "theological perspective." It's just responsible secular conservatism to recognize human limitations and caution against taking political or policy actions without considering possible undesirable or unintended consequences. Brooks is at his best when when he makes the case for ...

Seattle's history at risk in plans for Boeing plant demolition

Posted Sun, Jul 18, 12:33 p.m.

Tear it down, but don't put up new industry there! I worked there 1951-52, and also in what was called the DPC (Defense Plant Corporation) box office building across the street, between Marginal Way and Boeing Field. Where we saw the XB-52 take off, with the road atop the hill ...

Five major problems that International Soccer needs to fix

Posted Sat, Jul 3, 10:02 a.m.

Soccer/"futeball" is more like life than those "American" sports. It's chanchier, it's more unpredictable, physical skill and mental preparedness are necessary but not sufficient conditions, and it provides as close to "a level playing field" as possible for international competition. And for the nth time: the "ugly American" was a ...

Op Ed: Harriet Bullitt blesses a new incarnation of KING-FM

Posted Mon, Apr 5, 9:46 a.m.

Curiously enough, the shriveling of classical music from WQXR in New York could be a boost for a listener-supported KING-FM. The New York Times created, owned, and operated WQXR, which, with Web-casting added, was recognized as the bellwether classical music station. Then the Times sold WQXE to the New York City-sponsored ...

Don't call me retired!

Posted Mon, Jan 11, 11:47 a.m.

I'm part of that next older generation that is described above as conventionally retired. And I'm fortunate to have no health issues that I can't manage. But I wish my need for "vocation" would wane a bit. That's not an impossible dream. But the--so far--unbeatable foe is the lure of ...
