Apparently it was easier to ignore the consequences of our high energy demand when they were mostly wars and environmental destruction somewhere far from home.

Broken repeats an oft-heard comment about how bikes should be ticketed for riding too slowly. What law is being broken here? Should garbage trucks and farm tractors also be ticketed? There is no minimum speed limit on most roads, especially the ones bicycles ride on. RCW 46.61.425 does prohibit imbeding ...

@Lincoln: Where are the cars going to drive? We already have a huge traffic problem and massive local opposition any time road expansion is mentioned. Even if it were politically feasible, what would be the financial and environmental costs of the greatly expanded road system needed to accomodate expected growth ...

Wow, I am no fan of big government and waste but the previous comments completely floored me. Here's a guy suggesting we streamline procedures and make sure they actually save money, and it triggers a barrage of anti-government tirades. I seems to me entirely valid to question if adding more ...

The sacrifice many of us would like to see on the part of public sector employees is an end to the attitude of entitlement alluded to in this article. Why should government workers have the "right" to retirement at 65 (or earlier) with guaranteed pensions and medical coverage at a ...

The state could reverse course on onlne gambling. Due to the political influence of the tribes, Washington is the only state that makes online gambling a felony. It is ridiculous to me that an activity that is legal and even encouraged by the state (lottery) is a felony when practiced ...

Nice article. Although orino is right that every city once had a place like Dick's there are lots that don't any more. I can't argue that Dick's is good food but there is a certain rightness about it.

I realize we do have such committes now. In my view it is the reason why our neighborhoods are turning into identical blocks of boring condominium buildings. When I see a city skyline filled with advertising signs I see evidence of bustling economic activity. I think such activity would be ...

Implicit in this argument is the assumption that the city government should have the right to regulate what private building owners display on their own property. Even if we take it as a given that property rights are close to nonexistent in liberal Seattle, do we really want committees of ...

To those that are complaining about the inadequate snow response I have a question: What do you think should be done? In order for Seattle to clear up quickly after a 20 year storm we would have to have hundreds of plows on standby, salt stores, committees of bureaucrats devising ...

Bank tellers and salespeople want your business because their jobs depend on it. Metro bus drivers have government job security and don't need to care on customer satisfaction. Good customer service is incompatible with public sector employment.
