All we're missing in Ballard is a Korean BBQ spot and a ramen/udon/soba shop. Nearby, on 80th and 24th, a Lebanese place is opening up in the former Gabriel's Fire space. Yay!

I pop into the local GOs every couple of weeks to see if there's anything worth picking up. Some of the good deals have been roasted green chiles, Pomi cube-pack tomatoes and real San Marzano tomatoes for 88 cents a can. Needless to say, I bought a case. I also ...

Great piece, Hugo! I enjoy a similar relationship with my niece. She used to love going to Todai, too. Happy Father's Day to you.

I used to go to Pho So 1 fairly regularly when they first opened, alternating with Pho Bac on the corner of Rainier, Boren and Jackson and also sometimes visiting Huong Binh for some Hue food instead of pho. About 6 months ago, my 10-year old niece and I stopped ...

Oh man, Hugo, you just let the best seafood deal in Seattle out of the bag. Now I'm gonna have to take my posse with me to clear the punters out of my way so I can get my tuna collar.

I love all these types of oily fish. My favorite way is with grated daikon and ponzu. Having grown up on Okinawa, I really miss deep-fried and grilled small fish and have always wondered why they weren't eaten here more. Pressed mackerel sushi Kyoto-style is another wonderful dish. Our local ...

Gotta check this place out. My 9 yo niece is half Polish and my weekend dining companion so it would be a natural to take her there. I personally love food like this but being half Asian, and with Asian eating habits, I rarely cook middle European food.

Seems to me that if you have the gall to sign something that is aimed to deny citizens their human rights, i.e., equal protection, you should have the stones to be open about it. After all, it's the gay community that has been bearing the brunt of any harassment or ...

I remember hearing on a Japanese food show several years ago that xiao long bao that were dry were probably frozen. To get the best soupy ones, they had to be fresh made.

Procopio has been around for darn near 30 years. New hot thing, indeed! D'Ambrosio is within walking distance and has already become the go-to place for my 9-year old niece and me. I wish they would put in a couple more tables, though. Looking forward to tasting Fainting Goat's gelato.

I am so tired of the buzzword "artisanal" used with food that I would avoid any place or product that uses it. It is so overused that it has no meaning any more. May as well be "turbo" or "extreme", just a silly moniker. I'm sure it's a tasty place ...

I didn't realize how early they closed on Saturday and went to Hans' first. Got there about 3:15 and missed out. Oh well, I got my headcheese, Nuernberger Brats and Kabanossy, it wasn't a complete failure. Hans' closes at 5 PM, they close at 3 PM. Next weekend, I guess.

There used to be a place on Aurora and 137th in the '80s also called Tsing Tao that was Korean-Chinese. They served a mean jyajiangmyun. Unfortunately, hardly anyone serves the seafood version with sea cucumbers any more. The only places that still do it are Tai Ho in Kenmore and ...

I remember when I first moved to Seattle in the late '70s, Lynnwood used to be the "hinterlands" populated with truck drivers with gun racks in their back windows. Koreans started moving in and good eats started showing up in the '80s. Shoreline used to have some gems back then ...

Hugo, Once again, another great place to review. I kept putting off a visit to this place until last November and I'm glad I finally stopped in. I liked the Cuban over the Media Noche and need to go back and try the other offerings. My 9-year old niece and ...

Hugo, thanks for reminding me of this place. You are a man with a clue. I haven't been there for a few years. I bought their headcheese, Kabanossy, Hungarian sausages and the horseradish mixed with beets regularly. They didn't have much of an eating area then but I will go ...

@sitkaspruce42, Right on! That's why I never buy from those fools. I hear they use prop fish that they use over and over these days but when I quit buying from them years ago, they tossed your fish. The last thing I would want after paying for a wild salmon ...

The VMT seems to assume that there is a viable public transportation system in place as an option. The commute east-west from Ballard to Redmond where I work is about 2-2.5 hours each way door-to-door and 50 minutes to an hour each way by my car (30+ miles per gallon). ...
