The environmental case against the waterfront tunnel for Seattle

Posted Tue, Jul 19, 4:30 p.m.

The critical flaw in the ST5 plan is the notion that I-5 can absorb the added north-south traffic flow from the surface-only option with better signs, ramps and a limited upgrade to capacity. That's just nonsense, as anyone who has spent time on I-5 can attest. It is already a ...

In defense of Mike McGinn's tunnel position

Posted Fri, Aug 6, 2:45 p.m.

Please stop with the "Big Dig" comparisons. They are the worst kind of red herring. The Big Dig involved 3 separate roadways, 2 separate tunnels, including one that had to go under an existing subway line. Other than both being holes in the ground that cars pass through, the Big ...

Can it be? A Viaduct solution?

Posted Tue, Jan 13, 10:18 a.m.

This is a project that will have an ultimate lifespan of anywhere from 50-70 years. Thinking about it purely in terms of the immediate cost is short-sighted. The tunnel offers the best solution for the development of a waterfront that is actually part of the city.

Viaduct politicians reach a big moment of truth

Posted Fri, Jan 2, 3:10 p.m.

Which view are you referring to?: It's easy to generalize the potential negative impact of too many hi-rises and lament the resulting loss of views (for some people). Within a two block radius of my office, which is roughly at 7th and Olive, there are at least 5 sizable towers ...

Getting rolling on road tolling

Agree on a plan, then ask me to pay for it: Call me jaded, but soon after I moved to Seattle I had to pay an enormous car tab fee for the monorail. It never got built ... and I never got a refund. Don't get me wrong, I realize ...

Memo to P-I editors and everyone else: This is really big

Posted Fri, Jan 4, 10:41 a.m.

As Iowa goes so goes, well, nobody...: Sorry, the Iowa caucuses aren't "really big" ... except for the media. As you yourself pointed out, success in Iowa has rarely been an indicator of success in future primaries. The reason? Iowa isn't particularly representative of the rest of the country. On ...

As goes San Francisco...

Posted Wed, Jan 2, 2:47 p.m.

SF and Seattle, not too similar: Having lived in San Francisco and the Bay Area for 9 years and Seattle for the past 4, I think it's a stretch to compare the two cities (don't get me wrong, I love it here). Other than the basics of geography -- both ...
