What a reform agenda at UW might look like

Posted Mon, May 2, 7:50 a.m.

An important thing to bear in mind, when considering the impact of the "third bucket" idea, is that at every high-profile public university that I'm aware of - certainly including UW today - the average quality of out-of-state students is higher than the average quality of in-state students. A move ...

Finally, a renaissance on UW's Gothic campus

Posted Fri, Oct 15, 7:02 a.m.

Paccar Hall is indeed a phenomenal building. I'd like to put in a plug for LMN's other building on the UW campus -- the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering: http://lazowska.cs.washington.edu/Ed.LaCasse.small/ It's not clear to me why UW lets anyone else design buildings for the campus.

New York's bike lanes put Seattle 'sharrows' to shame

Posted Mon, Aug 23, 8:46 a.m.

I've been a daily bicycle commuter between Ballard, downtown, and the U District for more than 30 years. Sharrows seem like a dangerous waste of paint to me -- false advertising regarding bicycle safety and bicycle friendliness. My test is "Would I have been willing to ride there with my ...

Losing lanes to bikes will produce a jobs exodus

Posted Wed, Aug 18, 6:11 p.m.

During the entirety of my 30+ years as a daily bicycle commuter between Ballard, downtown, and the U District, I've watched businesses selfishly, shamelessly, and (unfortunately) successfully oppose bicycle commuting safety improvements. It's time for a change. Businesses and bicycles can co-exist in ways that improve Seattle for everyone. I ...

Seattle, toward a 'MetroNation'

Those of you interested in a quick look at some of the data behind Bruce's talk might want to take a look at some notes from a talk I gave 9 months ago extracted from his various reports in the "Metro Nation" series. See http://lazowska.cs.washington.edu/metro.pdf

Jumping into the fray ... Different individuals have different styles. And certain styles are best suited to certain places and certain times. But I have to say that Nickels' time as mayor was one of only two times during my 32 years in Seattle -- the other was the Norm ...

We are not 'the next Silicon Valley'

Posted Tue, Feb 19, 3:19 p.m.

Being John Markoff: Look, everybody understands that we must build upon our advantages and preserve our distinctiveness. Including John Markoff, who spends a lot of time both in Seattle and in Silicon Valley, and knows each region well. Let's be sure not to caricature what he said. He simply observed ...

Seattle City Council Bill 116090: In the context of this excellent article, it's important to note the Seattle City Council's badly misguided passage this week of Council Bill 116090. Essentially, this bill restricts parts of areas such as SODO and Ballard to "industrial" use. Technology startups need reasonably priced space ...

A classic Seattle start-up story: Flexcar

Posted Thu, Nov 1, 8:52 a.m.

"A classic Seattle startup story": Another way in which Flexcar is "a classic Seattle startup story" is that it's no longer a Seattle company. It's worth thinking about whether there are steps that we could take as a region to reduce infant mortality among startups, and to help more of ...
