A new world in South King County

Posted Thu, Dec 8, 11:01 a.m.

As a resident of Kent for 44 years I have seen the transformation with several waves of new folk joining our community (both immigrant and non-immigrant). For a number of years our city motto was "Kent Cares" which is abundantly demonstrated in this excellent article. I was pleased, along with ...

The odd season: some dare call it 'Advent'

Posted Fri, Dec 2, 10:40 p.m.

For those of us who can be classified as Type AAA+++ compulsive personalities the "waiting" of Advent is one of the real gifts. Thanks for the excellent reminder Tony and the parallel with your waiting for the new grandchild. A baby does bring us together!

Good leaders need good followers. Some tips on 'followership'

Posted Thu, Sep 29, 9:45 a.m.

Well said, Tony. The partnership of leader-follower that you describe takes a lot of maturity. As a follower, who is also at times a leader, there is the delicate dance of allowing someone else to lead which involves knowing and accepting the skills each of you have - and, more ...

Thanks, Knute for a beautifully written story. The brief mention in Seattle didn't take us to the experience like you did. It was kinda overshadowed by reports of all the other ceremonies. You are a good read for "the day after." Thank you. - Marvin Eckfeldt

In-your-face solicitations on downtown streets

Posted Thu, Aug 11, 9:31 a.m.

This issue is an important one. We need "safe streets" and the public needs to be educated about those who solicit whether it is for charitable contributions or initiative signatures. I vote for a Lightfoot-Rasmussen to carry the issue forward to some positive solutions!!!

How a local levy, up for renewal on Aug. 16, has helped struggling veterans

Posted Sun, Jul 31, 12:58 p.m.

CitizenCane, please check your facts. ALL of the levy is to provide DIRECT services to veterans only! That is what the contracts state and that is what the non-profits are required to provide. There is NO 50% for veterans and 50% for "general welfare for non-veterans!

How a local levy, up for renewal on Aug. 16, has helped struggling veterans

BlueLight - ALL human service agencies providing services are non-profit. Of course there are some costs to extend and provide the services but they are not like our capitalistic for-profit business where HUGE profits go to super wealthy corporate executives! Overhead is kept to a bare minimum in order to ...

How a local levy, up for renewal on Aug. 16, has helped struggling veterans

Thanks, Judy, for putting human faces on this huge issue; the responsibility of all of us to support women and men who return home with difficult survival issues because they faithfully served us (our country) in these two war efforts. All of these special levy funds go to outreach efforts ...

How hospitals became today's cathedrals

Posted Thu, Jun 2, 9:19 a.m.

I also had some second thoughts as I read the original article. How will our citizens with little or no insurance be able to afford this "Wellness Center"? Does that mean private pay and insurance patients factor into the bottom line? If hospitals are our new cathedrals, does that mean ...

The story of psychiatric meds is all about progress. Isn't it?

Judy, thanks for introducing me to Whitaker's work. A half a century of increasing use of drug therapy for these conditions produces telling results! The statement, "the drug will change the brain in ways that will likely make it necessary to continue taking it" - WOW! This creates a dependence ...

State's first execution in a decade: Asking a question

Posted Tue, Aug 24, 8:38 a.m.

A thoughtful reflection, Hubert. We do need to rethink our practice. If we had a "perfect" human justice system the issue would be much easier. Your illustrations are compelling evidence. The question, "Does eye-for-an-eye" create a just response? Maybe our decision to take a life is evidence of somethings deeper: ...
