I think this is a very good (and I have to say, unexpected) analysis by Carlson. As a fan of Crosscut, I believe this is exactly the kind of strong opinion writing that the site needs more of if it is to thrive.

Funny post, Knute, and excellent reporting in the Making Light blog item you linked above. I could feel the scam in this thing but didn't take the time to run it down. I'm glad the Making Light folks did. Gotta say, the I Write Like thing has been a very ...

Thank you, Knute. Nice reflection on a magazine that I enjoyed as a reader and, briefly, a writer. I can't think of WL&P; without remembering my own comical experience at a local journalism awards dinner. An editor at WL&P; had submitted something I'd written and it turned out I was ...

Thank you, Charles. What a nice piece about this excellent evening. The program was a perfect mix of reading, talking and performing, and I have to say you did a particularly good job of drawing Smith out and sifting among the many audience questions. I can't think of a better ...

Another excellent piece -- no surprise there -- but I was struck by the three (!) ads for Kindle that ran with this article, which of course is printed in pixels. Stuff's a changing, that's for sure. I certainly understand the charming curmudgeonly complaints about e-readers and the tactile superiority ...

What I know is that even in my "retirement" from Crosscut, I look forward to reading your fine essays as much as I did when I was editing them. Thanks for another great piece, Tony.

Thank you both for this smart article. I appreciate it on two levels -- as the recently departed Crosscut editor who a couple weeks ago likely would have edited it, and as the newly arrived communications director for Mayor McGinn, who is lucky to be here but smart enough to ...

"Which means the "It's Hooey" theory simply proves, rather than refutes, my thesis that Seattle Nice is a myth. So, thank you, naysayers, for proving me right." Genius!

Sue, this drives me crazy too. In communicating with my own teenage kids by Facebook, MySpace or text message, I'm struck by the barrage of misspellings: too/to, their/there, your/you're are almost always wrong, and a lot of words seem to be sounded out phonetically as though they've never been seen ...

Good discussion. Thank you to Ross for getting it going and to all you smart people for commenting. I agree with Danny that this was a good year for political journalism, and with Chuck and others who noted that it can be difficult to find it. Sjenner has a terrific ...

no joke: Steve, assuming you're not kidding about the AVM diagnosis, best wishes with the treatment. I appreciate the effort to find humor in your medical condition -- I've found myself doing the same thing; it puts people at ease -- but the reality of course is that there's nothing ...

Great piece, Casey: I agree completely about Danny and about your requirements for a good columnist. They're getting harder to come by all the time (the good columnists, I mean, not the requirements). Good discussion here too; I'm glad to see people are reading these various writers and forming opinions ...
