Good point about Tacoma mall being the source of many of the problems from which Tacoma has only recently begun to recover. In my ideal world, the whole thing would be leveled and turned into Puget Sound Prairie Park. That could do wonders for encouraging smarter, more humane, more transit ...

The center of gravity for the federal delegation and the state legislature never has been reliably liberal Seattle, which has been taken for granted by Democrats for obvious reasons. The suburbs of Seattle, Tacoma and Everett (not just Bellevue, but places like Puyallup, Lakewood, and Lake Stevens) are where the ...

Hey, take it easy on Tacoma, where Santorum recently got a well-deserved coating of glitter courtesy of a University of Puget Sound student. As an ex-Seattlelite and current Tacoman, I find that Tacoma lives up to many of the "lesser Seattle" ideals (in a good way!) to which Knute once ...

I'd rather ST fulfilled its promise to get light rail to Federal Way first, and then to Tacoma.

I'd like to see more info on the number of days different areas are actually out of compliance. In Pierce County, my recollection is that it's only on inversion-type stagnant air days, and even then the concentrations are just marginally over the levels in a lot of other parts of ...

Good story, but one geographical nit pick: Fife is east of Tacoma, not north -- I-5 heads west to east from the Tacoma Dome to Milton as it crosses what used to be the Puyallup River estuary.

Tacoma restored access along miles of Ruston Way waterfront 30 years ago. It's actually probably about time to upgrade it again and extend it to the restored waterfront growing along the Foss Waterway. But, as usual, the City of Destiny doesn't get the credit it's due from up north.

The City of Tacoma should buy and rehab the Old City Hall. Not cheap, but it might be the only way to be certain we won't lose it.

Re-financing of federal student loans is a great idea. Seems like that could be an economic stimulus both parties could agree on...

Why no mention of the Puyallup River, one of the most populated flood plains in the state, and a place where the tension between progress (levee setbacks and floodplain restoration) and development is perhaps the highest in the state?

You should compare to Tacoma Szechuan (which is actually in Lakewood) -- if Spiced is as good as that place, I would definitely make the trip to Bellevue!

Speaking of old Seattle, this reminded me of a Jean Godden column.

I like seeing Crosscut covering demographic and social justice issues around the region, but from the perspective of someone in (a not particularly poor(who knew, right?) part of) Tacoma, the article is simplistic. While recognizing Seattle as a major base of employment, the "center" of the Tacoma area is Tacoma. ...

Lake Washington's sockeye run, which is mostly (entirely these days?) composed of introduced hatchery fish anyway, was around 150,000. Not exactly "very few" for a run that existed in small numbers historically, but not high enough to allow for non-tribal fishing. It's great to see so many sockeye coming back ...

City Arts purports to promote the arts around Puget Sound. Why is this a Seattle-only festival? They should take advantage of some of the excellent venues in Tacoma, for instance.

It never ceases to amaze me what a lightning rod the bike/car issue is. I bike and I drive. I don't generally have problems with cars or bikes when I do. I support making biking much safer and easier, but people on both sides of the issue need to quit ...

Tacoma's leaders should consider how much better off it is without the smelter when it considers whether the Simpson Kraft pulp mill still makes sense (regardless of what a majority of Tacoma residents think -- residents of towns dependent on industrial polluters often suffer from a form of Stockholm Syndrome). ...

You're right, Seattle is hardly alone as a bungalow city -- it's a Northwest thing. I'd add Tacoma, Boise, Olympia and Bellingham to your list. All can benefit from a plan to increase density while preserving cool old neighborhoods.
