Memo to Seattle Schools: Leadership is not the (only) problem

Posted Mon, Jan 9, 9:10 p.m.

I don't know how to say this, yet again, so I'll try a metaphor. Doesn't matter who is driving the school bus, or how good they are at it, it'll never win the Indy 500. The engine, the body style, the size, everything is wrong for winning the Indy 500. ...

Big guy: Liquor changes will hurt little guy wine shops

Posted Sat, Dec 10, 1:19 p.m.

Is there any example where government has turned a function over to the private sector that has been good for small business or consumers. Post Office? nope. Utilities. nope. In-country services for the military? uh...NO. I can't come up with anything! Hmmmmm. Wonder how *this* story will turn out.

Mitt Romney, new urbanist?

Posted Sat, Dec 10, 1 p.m.

So.... I'm thinking maybe the Brits understand something we're only now beginning to. Mitt, Newt, Michelle, Jon, Herman (OK, I'll include him out of courtesy)... they want to be President. I'm not sure they want to do the actual work of governing. So maybe we need a constitutional amendment to ...

Get some backbone about the state budget, progressives!

Posted Sat, Aug 13, 11:29 a.m.

@orino: Actually, the baby boomers have been paying since the 1970s. We've paid for our parents' retirements and we've paid for our children's education. We've paid for four wars (and paid for the Vietnam war with our blood). We paid to put Hubble into space. We paid for HIV/AIDS research ...

Should government get out of the marriage business?

Posted Sat, Aug 13, 11:10 a.m.

First, a correction of fact... Unitarian Universalists (the oldest Christian-based religion in the country) have been conducting marriage ceremonies for same-gender couples for nearly 20 years and have long been irked by the media's assertion that same-gender marriage is opposed by all religions. As for McKenna... being smart isn't the ...

Updated: Gov. Reichert? Gov. Constantine?

Posted Tue, May 31, 3:33 p.m.

Repeat: Would love to see a governor who doesn't need training wheels. Someone who has actual experience with the language and process of managing transportation, utilities, education, public safety and other systems. Someone who has the knowledge to manage state government instead of relying on filters from others. I'd even ...

The thin 'blanking' blue line

Posted Thu, May 26, 11 a.m.

I find people who get very quiet and calm in a heated situation to be much more intimidating and scary than people who yell, with or without profanity. Yelling just escalates a situation. Quiet calm puts everyone on alert.

Allen takes a hard look at himself and others, not just Bill Gates

Posted Tue, Apr 26, 8:11 a.m.

I was on page 256 struggling to understand the main character of the story when it struck me... could it be that Paul Allen is the real Forrest Gump?

The P-I's death two years later: in no mood to mark the occasion

Posted Wed, Apr 20, 11:56 a.m.

I, too, worked for a company that closed its doors, in Spring of 2008, and laid of 750 local employees. While many people had a hard time finding jobs, those of us over 50 have had a miserable time. I, too, went thru the severance money, my 401k, and unemployment. ...

Washington's governors race is going to be a donnybrook

Posted Tue, Apr 19, 12:52 p.m.

All I want is someone who actually has hands-on experience managing the complexities of government. Someone who knows how a utility works; understands the complex transportation issues between urban, rural, and suburban communities; who's actually had to work with third-party vendors and Federal contracts. Seattle and Washington have suffered for ...

City policies on police: Can our elected leaders make the calls?

Posted Sun, Mar 27, 1:13 p.m.

I must admit that what gets me every time is how surprised police officers seem that their lives are sometimes in danger. It's their job to put their lives in danger, not to protect themselves first and worry about the public later. In our Democracy, the ultimate power of Justice ...

Open letter to the Seattle School Board

Posted Wed, Mar 2, 1:39 p.m.

There are two subjects being discussed in this line of posts. One is about the operations of the district (the foundation of the building, to use a metaphor) and the other is the posts and beams (teachers and curriculum). I agree we have some serious post and beam problems. And ...

McGinn stirs the embers with his 'trust' insult to Gregoire
