Women and the death penalty

Posted Thu, Sep 30, 6:45 a.m.

Regarding the rebuke from Iran, I'd guess it has something to do with the fact that so many here in the US are protesting the death sentence handed down to an Iranian woman who did pretty much the exact same thing as Teresa Lewis (had another man murder her husband).

Southeast Seattle, 98118: Yes, my diverse zip code is cool

Posted Fri, Jun 25, 4:21 p.m.

Refreshing honesty, Former_Belltowner. However, as a long-time white resident of the zip code I'll say that although I'm no big fan of ghetto behavior, I do actually prefer my non-white neighbors to the newer white residents exactly because I can't stand the dishonesty and hypocrisy of so-called "progressives" who trumpet ...

Rejuvenating one of Seattle's oldest theaters

I'm not so optimistic about Columbia City. It has a dearth of professional businesses, very little in the way of industry and the area is politically far from cohesive. One thing I have noticed is that the younger white culture in Columbia City is not particularly dynamic, but rather resembles ...

A new 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' for a new social cause

Posted Mon, May 3, 3:17 a.m.

The mail-order bride industry is not as benign as wfprice suggests. The women transported are often not well-informed and generally have no say in or even knowledge of the men they will end up with until after they are transported. Are you using the word "transported" to suggest they are ...

A new 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' for a new social cause

"I can scarcely think of a worldwide problem that would not be ameliated by promoting women's rights and women's education." How about the dearth of boys and young men enrolled in universities in Anglo countries? I'd say that's a problem that couldn't be helped *at all* by promoting women's rights ...

I wouldn't expect much more in the way of commentary on this one -- we'll probably be the only two to read this piece all day.

A "pastor" supporting the work of a hardcore Communist atheist... Some Christian you are, Tony. "It understands that violence against women is a very deep and very widespread social pathology that is all-too-often regarded as normal or acceptable." Objectively speaking, violence against men is a bigger problem, and more likely ...

Salish Sea name adopted in BC

Posted Sat, Feb 20, 10:10 p.m.

Well, it isn't really a "sea" according to my understanding of the term. If anything, it's the imposition of a political agenda that stretches back to the dominance of the inland waterways by a more aggressive, warlike slaving culture (i.e. the Salish). There is Puget Sound, and then the Strait ...

Island Girl: I can see why that cop jumped to conclusions

The only thing that grieves me still is that J is the one who paid the largest price — in terms of comfort, dignity, and personal safety — though he was the least culpable. Luckily, he is a decent enough man to put it behind him and move on. Unfortunately, ...

The end of several eras

Changing of the guard: It's an interesting idea, but a bit of a head-scratcher of a question at the end. My take is that institutions are made up of people, and there is a bit of a changing of the guard just beginning. I don't think institutions are over, but ...

Writing Wikipedia for Seattle

Posted Fri, Jun 20, 4:07 p.m.

The trouble with Wikipedia: After one too many run-ins with editors who insisted on using the Seattle City Clerk's Neighborhood Map Atlas – not facts on the ground – as the basic taxonomy for articles on Seattle neighborhoods (I'm sorry, but the president of the UW does not live in ...
