Palin: behavioral advice to the media
Sarah Palin has admitted that she reads mainstream media such as The New York Times and The Economist. Does that mean she respects the role of the media and silly old traditions like the First Amendment? It all depends on how you parse opaque statements, some of which sound like she's tapping into her inner Dick Cheney.
Here she is in an interview with Carl Cameron of Fox News. First she asked, after admitting she read leading newspapers, "that the media tries a little bit harder also. And that this is a two-way street, that there is fairness, just objectivity and fairness and truth. That's all Americans ask for."
Asked by Cameron to explain herself about fairness and objectivity (somewhat rich, coming from a Fox News reporter), Palin had this to say:
"As we send our young men and women overseas in a war zone to fight for democracy and freedoms, including freedom of the press, we've really got to have a mutually beneficial relationship here with those fighting the freedom of the press, and then the press, though not taking advantage and exploiting a situation, perhaps they would want to capture and abuse the privilege. We just want truth, we want fairness, we want balance."
Feel better?

Bong hits 4 Palin: You asked if she respects the First Amendment.
I have to tell myself, for fear that she could be the VP, that she does not respect the First Amendment.
If she did respect it then maybe she would not have agreed with the Supreme Court ruling on Morse v. Frederick, the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case. That case, I want to think she would remember, involved a high school student in Alaska, the same state that her father is a public school teacher in, where 18-year-old Joseph Frederick displayed a banner that read "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" while the Olympic torch passed by, in Alaska. He was not on school property, he was not a representitive of the school, he was expressing his First Amendment Right.
The school board, in Alaska, punished him. The Supreme Court ruled and agreed that his First Amendment Rights act could be punished.
Alaska Governor Palin could have not agreed with the Supreme Court Ruling against the First Amendment Rights of Joseph Frederick, an Alaskan citizen, and she could have told Katie Couric (sp).
So, I think the answer to your question is likely no.

Sophomoric cheap shots: So much bitterness over the existence of one little cable channel that doesn't adhere to the New York and DC media group think. There's more to Fox News than Bill O'Reilly and Shaun Hannity. In the same regard, there's more to NPR than Daniel Schorr and the Tappet Brothers, although Schorr is occasionally funnier.

Somewhat rich? Do you mean like Olberman?: Where is the Crosscut story on the accuracy of Botox Joe's comments during the debate? Why don't you go down to Katies diner and ask them how they feel about Joe? Whats that? His shout out diner hasn't existed for 20 years? Does the fact that he lies with such ease about issues large and small even register with you? Probably not.
