Crosscut held its first Members-only party Thursday night, using the event as a housewarming for our new offices in Belltown and a way to thank lots of new Charter Members. Nice crowd, nice vibes. Thanks to our Marilyn Hoe for all the party prep, to Hale's Ales for the brews, and to ACT for providing a pair of tickets for Sisters' Christmas. And to our many Members who joined in our first Charter Membership campaign.
We had a good question and comment session from our guests. Some good ones: Where'd the name Crosscut come from? Any way to make the comments better to the stories? Why not more stories about Portland? What kind of people read Crosscut.com? When are we going to pay more attention to the Eastside? Will Crosscut reporters protect sources, even to the point of going to jail? How many more conferences on "The future of journalism" can we stand?
We'll have lots more free-to-Members events. So I hope you join. We need your support of course, and last night proved to me and others how much we need your good questions and advice. It's easy to become a Member.

It was a good event and many, many thanks to Mr. Brewster for his relentless efforts to create a public space where we can find, build social, political, and cultural community. Someone once said we need three places in our lives--a place to live, a place to work, and a place to hang out. Crosscut provides an exciting place to hang our verbal hats and have a thought-provoking beer. Please join.

Yes, it was a nice event and good to see so many great folks supporting Crosscut. It has become a "must read" every day, and I agree with those who noted that the comments threads are consistently thoughtful. As head of the Washington News Council (www.wanewscouncil.org) for almost 12 years, I welcome Crosscut to the wonderful (but challenging) non-profit world. Hope we can find ways to work together to promote accurate, high-quality local and regional journalism -- which has been our core mission since 1998. Let's all keep up the good work!

For me to pass up a party means I really couldn't make it! Hopefully I'll be at the next one and meet some of the Crosscut readers -- I do enjoy being part of the Crosscut team. And no, I don't think I'd go to jail ... well, maybe if there was a party involved.
