Will Seattle forgive soccer co-owner Drew Carey for being a conservative?
When I heard that comedian and Bob Barker replacement Drew Carey was helping to bring Major League Soccer to Seattle, I shared the information with a friend who was appalled. So was I. My friend was horrified that one of Hollywood's big (and rare) conservatives was messing around in our town. I was reacting to the fact that an un-American foreign sport was invading our turf.
I was also disappointed that Carey, a Cleveland Browns fan, would be allowed to raise the 12th Man flag at the Seahawks Monday Night Football game to help promote the wrong kind of football.
But back to politics. Seattle doesn't much like Republicans, and Carey has given money to Republican candidates. He's also entertained George W. Bush and the troops in Iraq with his stand-up. Essentially, he's as right wing as you might expect a guy with a crewcut and big glasses from Ohio to be. I mean, it's not like he's been hiding behind his image.
But the truth is, Carey isn't a Bushie, he's a Libertarian. Among Carey's current conservative activities: The Drew Carey Project for the libertarian Reason Foundation (Free Minds and Free Markets!), a series of video shorts where Carey promotes stuff like medical marijuana and private highways. Hey, it beats the pathetic warmongering rants of Dennis Miller.

Reasonable Carey: My attention has been caught by Drew Carey as of late.
I'm a subscriber to Reason - a surprisingly popular monthly (and not surprisingly very well written). I must say a libertarian (small l) host of the 'Price is Right' is quite entertaining.
I bet Steven Colbert may be looking for his missing 'T'.

Only in Seattle: Drew Carey is more of a libertarian than a Republican. I don't see a problem.
I know Matt Hasselbeck and Mack Strong both went to the President's fundraiser this year and no one seems to really care.

Since when does entertaining the troops make one a Republican??: I adore Drew Carey, and I don't care if he's a Republican, a Libertarian, or a Martian. Why should this concern people? Have we here in righteously non-tolerant, latte-sucking, raw-sewage-dumping but screaming at Victoria hypocrite-land, Seattle, become so spite-filled about politics that we cannot handle someone who might espouse views a wee bit to the right of our own? Maybe people were spooked by Clay Bennett and his team of basketball raiders ("we'll take the guys, but keep the lesbians at Key").
Really, Seattle has become so friggin' pretentious. If anyone can be upset with Drew because he goes half-way around the world to entertain our men and women in uniform, well, perhaps we should stuff those people into a car in a Faluja marketplace and see what happens.
Raise the flag on REAL football, Drew. This bonafide Democrat will be cheering you on.

Tincture of Tolerance: Good iodine medicine for Seattle's cuts and bruises to have someone who blows against the Hollywood winds involved in our community.

What---did he put cement on traintracks and break windows??: This is crazy--why should Seattle have to forgive him?? Did he put cement on traintracks and break police car and shop windows? Throw trash on the ground? There's no need to "forgive" him. He's far better behaved than the Leftists behaving horridly down in Olympia right now! Have things gotten this bad in Seattle that decent, law-abiding people must be "forgiven" for being conservative? Heaven help this town.

Seattle IS the problem: I should add that just having had to ASK the question shows the problem with intolerance that "tolerant" Seattle has. Grow up, people. Start worrying about REAL problems.

What's a "leftist?": For that matter, what's a republican? Isn't Drew Carey a comedian or is that just another label? I think he's funny. On the other hand, soccer? I didn't realize that soccer was so political.
Occasionally I believe they try to make news out of something that really isn't - Did Carey pay to have this in the paper?
Happy Thanksgiving, or grumpy Thanksgiving, depending on how you look at it.
