Fri, 18 Jul 2008 05:00:01 PDT Crosscut Finally, some good Seattle sports news http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/15561/Finally%2C+some+good+Seattle+sports+news/
When I edited Seattle Weekly, I issued a ban on soccer coverage. Why edit a newspaper when you can't, very occasionally, act like a tin-pot dictator and shape it to your perverse desires? I left the paper two years ago but hoped the new editor would realize my no-soccer edict was a lifetime ban. Apparently not. There's a new dictator in town, and the moratorium has been lifted. The editor himself has written a column about soccer in Seattle. The good news: He's not buying the hype that it's the next big thing.
Sun, 06 Jul 2008 13:44:01 PDT Crosscut As the Sonics leave town, it may help the arts http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/15610/As+the+Sonics+leave+town%2C+it+may+help+the+arts/
In all the reporting about the Sonics decision, we tend to overlook the intense clamoring over a taxing source, the so-called "stadium taxes," that bedevils the politics. A lot of groups want to lay claim to those taxes, which are supposed to go away after the Kingdome, Safeco Field, and Qwest Field are paid off, but are really catnip to politicians for their pet causes. The taxes have two attractions: they are not really an "increase" if you just extend their life, and they fall mostly on visitors, who don't vote locally.

One of the main supplicants is the arts. Thereby hangs an interesting story.
Sat, 05 Jul 2008 11:17:01 PDT Crosscut Screwed by the Okies — again! http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/15564/Screwed+by+the+Okies+%26mdash%3B+again%21/
Who's to blame for losing the Sonics to Oklahoma City? That's the question being kicked around town. But I wonder why it is that "world class" Seattle keeps getting its collective ass kicked by the Okies.
Thu, 03 Jul 2008 17:00:01 PDT Crosscut Seahawks draft pick is a real star — on YouTube, anyway http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/13790/Seahawks+draft+pick+is+a+real+star+%26mdash%3B+on+YouTube%2C+anyway/ The National Football League draft this past weekend yielded its usual array of players unknown to all but the growing legions of college-football-talent specialists. The rest of us may not know a long snapper from a red snapper, but we certainly know a YouTube star when we see one Tue, 29 Apr 2008 05:01:01 PDT Crosscut Next time, be prepared, Snowhawks! http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/10687/Next+time%2C+be+prepared%2C+Snowhawks%21/
It was obvious for all to see yesterday, Jan. 12, that the Seahawks weren't prepared for the Packers and their snowstorm. But coming from the rainy, temperate Northwest, how could they have been?

Easy. Here's what they should do next year if they find themselves headed for Green Bay or any other upper-Midwest or northeastern outdoor stadium in January:
Sun, 13 Jan 2008 12:55:01 PST Crosscut To the bitter-cold end, Mike Holmgren plays it safe http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/10675/To+the+bitter-cold+end%2C+Mike+Holmgren+plays+it+safe/ It's fourth and two, there are 12 minutes left, and you're down by 22 points. Punt or go for it? Typically, Holmgren punts. The Giants, after all, nearly beat a 16-0 team. The Seahawks lost to a 4-12 team. Sat, 22 Dec 2007 05:00:01 PST New West A quarter mile's worth of punts http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/9975/A+quarter+mile%27s+worth+of+punts/ It's not often that Seattle Seahawk fans get treated to a game-long Ryan Plackemeier highlight film, but that was the case against Carolina Sunday, Dec. 16. The most memorable aspect of the Hawk 13-10 loss was the Seattle punter thumping on fourth down to end his club's first eight possessions. Old-timers would later say they couldn't recall such futility since they last toted up Liz Taylor's attempts at successful marriages. The punter moved the ball about a quarter mile. The rest of the Hawks (9-5) were good for 280 yards, many of those gathered during a meaningless TD drive as time expired. Sun, 16 Dec 2007 17:08:01 PST Crosscut A Seahawks dynasty by default http://www.crosscut.com/seattle-seahawks/9779/A+Seahawks+dynasty+by+default/ When your opponents are 12-27, juggernaut is not quite the right term. But the fact is the Seahawks have now won a fourth consecutive division title. And the other local teams are totally unexcellent, too. So was I. My friend was horrified that one of Hollywood's big (and rare) conservatives was messing around in our town. I was reacting to the fact that an un-American foreign sport was invading our turf. On Sunday, Nov. 4, both the Seahawks and the Sonics were competitive going into the second halves of games against, respectively, the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Clippers. Late during both games, the other club pulled ahead. Sound familiar? Mon, 05 Nov 2007 11:27:01 PST Crosscut
