Is Tim Eyman ripe for the Oklahoma treatment?

Given the rivalry with Oklahoma City over the Sonics, we're not too likely to emulate politics from Oklahoma, but here's one political ploy that may be worth borrowing, particularly now that Tim Eyman, the initiative king, is riding high again. Attention John Ladenburg, Pierce County Executive who is gearing up to challenge Rob McKenna for Attorney General in 2008. Here's an Oklahoma six-shooter.

No ferry tale endings in this fleet

The surprise pre-Thanksgiving yanking of the last two of the old "Steel Electric" boats in the Washington ferry system – the Klickitat and the Illahee – might mean the end for some venerable old friends. The aging ferries have deteriorating hulls. Earlier this fall, the two others in the fleet, the Nisqually and the Quinault – were pulled from service due to corrosion bad enough that the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, critical of the ferry system's slowness to replace the vessels, dubbed the ferries "Washington state's Titanic".

Happy day of mourning, turkey!

It's an annual rite in Seattle: 'Tis the season to piss on a holiday. One year it was King County discouraging employees from using the phrase "Merry Christmas" because it was not religiously neutral. Last year it was Port of Seattle Scrooges removing Christmas trees at Sea-Tac Airport. This year, we're off to an early start. The Seattle School District sent a widely publicized note to parents about the "myth" that Thanksgiving is a "happy time." Indeed not, if you're Native American, says the district – it's a day of "mourning."
