After the 43rd District Democratic caucus on Saturday, I wondered at the choice of the exit music: "Sweet Home, Alabama," a great Southern rock song, but notoriously controversial for what some people suggest is a defense of George Wallace and a dismissal of Watergate. But time has a way of morphing culture and politics in unexpected directions--or maybe it's the influence of Chernobyl. A friend sent this along: a version of the song sung by--and no kidding here--a Finnish rock band called the Leningrad Cowboys and the Red Army Choir (of evil empire fame) performing in Russia. Unbelievable.
When we last fully experienced the ongoing contest between Gov. Christine Gregoire and Republican Dino Rossi, it was November 2004 and Gregoire trailed by a meager 261 votes. Lawsuits, hand counts and over six months of legal dispute lead the Supreme Court to declare Gregoire the governor by the closest margin in the state's history: .0045%.
The on-again, off-again saga of saving the Sonics and KeyArena has taken another turn. Apparently the drop-dead date of April 10 for having a deal for the Steve Ballmer ownership group is really just a coma-threat. The group of heavy-hitter owners-in-waiting will simply go into hibernation once the Sonics decamp to Oklahoma City.
