The Nuke Building could get nuked

You may have read in late August that Hanford's B reactor was granted National landmark status by the U.S government. The B reactor was the world's first full-scale nuclear reactor and it helped drive the famed Manhattan Project. It produced the plutonium used for the first atomic test blast and for the bomb the U.S. dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. The deserved designation offers a hook to check on what's going on with the University of Washington's own historic Nuclear Reactor Building (More Hall Annex) in Seattle. It was slated for demolition this summer while it was also up for national register consideration. So, what happened?

Sausage Links, e-mails from Eyman edition

The past week must have been exciting for local balloteer Tim Eyman. First, the state Supreme Court appeared to side with Eyman when it heard arguments from Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown about the consitutionality of Initiative 960, last year's successful Eyman-sponsored measure requiring a two-thirds vote in both houses of the Legislature to raise taxes. Brown had hoped to get the court to directly address the issue, but observers said the justices weren't receptive to her arguments. Eyman sent out a press release later that day claiming victory. ...

Women push back on Palin

That Thursday night, Barack Obama rocked the Mile High Stadium. Obama soared, McCain sank. Then the next week came Sarah. Palin, who electrified the Republican convention and soon was the topic of conversation. The Obama campaign was eclipsed by the Palin din. What was at first surprise for many politically active women turned to disbelief and then to anger. Picking Palin was a transparent effort by McCain to woo Clinton supporters: "Vote for Palin, she is one of you." But even a cursory look at her right-wing credentials proved she was not one with most of us. Nonetheless, her selection was sucking up media attention and stealing momentum from the Obama campaign What to do?
