The former transportation secretary on why Crosscut's editorial expansion is key to a stronger system. Plus, who wants to join us in a cushy Mariners suite?

As life in our region becomes increasingly more urban, Crosscut’s expanded coverage of urban issues, including technology, development and transportation become distinctly more important.

Transportation in Puget Sound is at a proverbial fork in the road. Planners expect another million citizens in the next 20 years. Our ferries, roads and freeways are in need of rehabilitation and struggle to keep up with the daily demand of trucks and commuters. The impact of the recession undermined basic operating revenues for local transit service. In recent years, partisan politics has reared its ugly head on transportation issues in an uncharacteristic way.

The good news is there are many transportation improvements underway in the region. Most regional and community leaders embrace the vision of an integrated transportation system as the prudent path forward. But there are decisions to be made now on what investments are first, what’s next and how should we pay for the transportation services we want.

Your Crosscut membership ensures that we, as members of an ever-urbanizing region, have a forum for views from all sides, in-depth analysis of the back-story and choices before us, and an opportunity for civic engagement using social media.

Together, we can explore, discuss, agree or disagree and, in the end, provide our elected officials with informed positions on the quality of life we want in Puget Sound and Washington state.

In order for our region to get smarter on urban issues, Crosscut needs to get stronger. Click here to become a member and join the discussion today.
