KCTS 9 is excited to continue the KCTS 9 Book Club, a virtual* conversation event series, in collaboration with Third Place Books in Seattle and PBS Books.

Monthly book selections are made by a rotating group of Washington authors who will also host the virtual discussions. The twist: authors will select books that aren't their own! Most months, books selected will be fiction, but we may change it up once every so often. Themes will correspond to current programming airing on KCTS 9.

This month, we'll be reading The Summer Book by Tove Jansson. Local author Kelly Brenner will lead the discussion. The selection complements selected programs airing on KCTS 9 related to science and nature:

  • Battle Over Bears Ears-  Wednesday, Nov 10 at 7pm: Bears Ears, a remote section of land lined with red cliffs and filled with juniper, is at the center of a fight over who has a say in how Western landscapes are protected and managed. 
  • NOVA Universe Revealed- 5 part series Wednesdays at 9 pm: Take a ringside seat as NOVA captures moments of high drama when the cosmos changed forever. Diamond Planets, zombie stars, black holes and more: The cast of characters is extraordinary, and each one is its own incredible story to tell.
  • NATURE- Wednesdays at 8 pm. In arid regions across Africa, the waterhole is central to everyone’s life. It is where animals visit to drink. But there is an entire community of creatures who call the waterhole “home,” many of whom live at an elephant’s toenail height. 

Books are available for purchase through Third Place Books for a 20% discount**. Orders can be placed HERE and may be picked up in person at any Third Place Books location or shipped directly to you.

About the facilitator:

Kelly Brenner is a naturalist, writer and photographer based in Seattle. She is the author of NATURE OBSCURA: A City’s Hidden Natural World from Mountaineers Books, a finalist for the 2021 Washington State Book Awards and shortlisted for the 2021 Pacific Northwest Book Awards. She writes articles about natural history and has bylines in Crosscut, Popular Science, National Wildlife Magazine and others. On the side she writes fiction. Kelly holds a bachelors degree in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon and a certificate in non-fiction writing from the University of Washington.
