Race/Immigration Producer

Cascade Public Media is hiring a Race/Immigration Producer to craft video and multimedia stories about issues surrounding race and immigration in Seattle, Puget Sound and the Pacific Northwest. The ideal candidate approaches the work with a deep understanding of communities of color, immigrant and refugee communities, the historical and systemic roots of inequity, race- and immigration-related policy, and the civil rights and social justice movements. The producer will work with a team of seasoned journalists, video producers, social media wizards and web developers to make KCTS 9 public television and its sister organization Crosscut essential sources of news, analysis and perspective for the region.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
I.  Planning

  1. Conduct in-depth research/interviews to develop enterprising story ideas on various topics
  2. Pitch video stories and multimedia projects that engage digital and broadcast audiences
  3. Manage pre-production planning and logistics
  4. Work with executive editor and/or senior producers to determine the content and focus of projects
  5. Engage in ongoing survey of the digital and broadcast video landscape to inspire innovation


II.  Content and program production

  1. Produce journalistic, documentary-style videos that are informative and engaging
  2. Work independently, as well as part of a team, to complete video/multimedia projects
  3. Serve as primary or secondary photographer in the field
  4. Collect and manage media assets for video/multimedia projects
  5. Write video scripts and web articles
  6. Record voice-over narration
  7. Act as primary video editor or work with internal/external editors, depending on the project
  8. Assist web editors with development additional web assets and publishing


III.  Coordinate

  1. Coordinate additional media acquisition and rights
  2. Organize and deliver relevant materials to Marketing & Communications and Digital publishing departments
  3. Collaborate with graphic design department to build animation and other assets
  4. Assist in training and supervising interns
  5. Secure releases
  6. Maintain social media presence and respond to audience feedback
  7. Assist in media management and maintaining media asset archives

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent experience strongly preferred
  2. Minimum of five years of video producing/multimedia/journalism experience; ability to produce text, video and digital content strongly preferred
  3. Demonstrates excellent content judgment; possess journalistic reporting skills; and facility with an array of multimedia storytelling tools and techniques
  4. Experience with Canon C100, C300, Canon 5D dSLR, Adobe CC/Premiere Pro strongly preferred
  5. Ability to both self-generate creative projects and work with restrictions to meet very specific project/initiative needs
  6. Production experience using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter
  7. Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  8. Demonstrated ability to uphold high ethical standards of journalism
  9. Fluency in a second language a plus


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  2. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  5. Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted
  6. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather
