Staff Photographer

Full time

Act as a general-assignment photojournalist, shooting still images and video for Crosscut’s daily news feed, plus photo essays and special projects. Shoot and produce occasional video pieces for CPM’s digital channels and broadcast. Assist with art direction and acquisition and social media in order to reach more people, build a strong organization and inspire a smarter world.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

I.  Plan

  1. Research sources and enterprising story ideas from a range of subject areas
  2. Plan photo shoots, working with editors and photo subjects to capture images that tell powerful stories in conjunction with written stories
  3. Map out longer term photo-essays and special projects in conjunction with the Production Manager
  4. Identify opportunities to include photographs and video with Crosscut stories to give them stronger visual appeal and impact
  5. Follow established photo guidelines and ensure assets are delivered in a timely manner
  6. Identify and pitch stories for other CPM brands

II.  Shoot and Report

  1. Shoot still images and occasional video for Crosscut's daily and weekly news feed
  2. Shoot and produce occasional photo essays and special projects for publication on various CPM platforms
  3. Shoot and produce occasional video pieces for CPM's digital channels and broadcast
  4. Shoot occasional CPM events when time allows
  5. Report and write news and feature stories for Crosscut
  6. Web production of photo-driven stories on Crosscut's website for self-generated work as well as freelancers

III.  Collaborate

  1. Work with editors to identify and acquire photos and art to accompany news stories, advise on ethical dilemmas related to photojournalism
  2. Collaborate with social media team, creating stills and images for Instagram, Facebook and other social media channels
  3. Work with CPM legal department on various issues related to photography
  4. Secure and submit appropriate releases from photo and video subjects
  5. Archive images and related caption and credit information to make them available to CPM staff present and future
  6. Maintain and keep inventory of field gear and camera equipment
  7. Live event management of photographic staff and assets for efficient delivery to a large group of editorial and marketing stakeholders

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field or equivalent experience strongly preferred
Five years of photography/multimedia experience
Demonstrates excellent content judgment; possess solid reporting skills; and facility with an array of multimedia storytelling tools and techniques
Experience with Canon C100, C300, Canon 5D dSLR, Adobe CC/Premiere Pro strongly preferred
Ability to both self-generate creative projects and work with restrictions to meet very specific project/initiative needs
Production experience using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter
Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Demonstrated ability to uphold high ethical standards of journalism

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Ability to view data on a computer screen for long periods of time
  2. Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  3. Ability to regularly type on a keyboard
  4. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Washington State driver license
  5. Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds unassisted
  6. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather
