Ever since Twitter started to catch on, Northwest writer Mark Trahant has been fascinated with the challenges and opportunities of communicating in 140 characters. He once taught a university course about Twitter and democracy, and he writes a more-or-less daily rhyme off the news on Twitter.
The rhyme, which he started while he was editorial page editor of the old Seattle Post-Intelligencer, is called NewsRimes4Lines and has a quite respectable 1,500-plus followers. His latest piece is about the introduction today (June 1) of Washington state's candy tax, one of several approved by the legislature and Gov. Chris Gregoire to soften the state's budget shortfall:
